Feature

Machinability: Having good machinability for the aluminum alloys.

Forming: Either conventional cold working or hot working.

Welding: Conventional welding methods.

Heat Treatment: Non-heat treatable alloy.

Forging: Hot forged in the range of 950 F - 500 F.

Hot Working: The hot working range (as for forging) is 950 F - 500 F. In that range the alloy is easily hot worked.

Cold Working: Cold worked by all conventional methods.

Annealing: Annealing during or following cold working, it is basically done at 775 F, allowing adequate time for thorough heating, followed by air cooling.

Hardening: Hardens as a result of cold working only.

Application

Chemical equipment, duct work, and in general sheet metal work, eyelet stock, ice cube trays, cooking utensils, pressure vessels, builder's hardware, garage doors, awning slats, refrigerator panels, gas lines, gasoline tanks, heat exchangers, drawn and spun parts, and storage tanks etc.

Feature

Machinability: Relatively fair machinability. Hard temper than as annealed. And quality of finish becomes better in the hard condition machine. Oil lubricants used for machining, except that very light cuts may be done dry.

Forming: Formed at room temperature. Successive cold working decreases the formability.

Heat Treatment: Hardened by heat treatment. It does harden due to cold working.

Forging: Forged in the temperature range of 950 F down to 500 F

Cold Working: The alloy cold works, Formed by drawing or spinning. However the amount of cold work imparted by spinning makes intermediate annealing necessary.

Annealing: Anneal at 650 F and air cool.

Hardening: Hardens only from cold working.

Application

hydraulic tubes, kitchen cabinets, small boats, gas lines, refrigerator panels, utensils, welded pressure vessels, marine, auto aircraft cryogenics, drilling rigs, TV towers, transportation equipment, small boats, home freezers, milk crates, aircraft tube, fencing, missile components etc.

Feature

Machinability: In the harder T 4 and T6 tempers ehich is good. It is comparatively less easy to machine in the annealed temper.

Forming: Easily cold worked & formed in the annealed condition. Stamping, spinning, bending, deep drawing are all readily accomplished using standard methods.

Welding: Very good welding characteristics & may be welded by all of the common welding techniques.

Heat Treatment: Solution heat treat at 990 F for adequate time to allow for thorough heating & then water quench. Precipitation hardening is done at 320 F about 18 hours and air cool, followed by 350 F for 8 hours and air cooling.

Forging: Hot forged at temperatures in the range of 900 F to 750 F.

Hot Working: Hot working may be done in the temperature range of 700 F - 500 F.

Cold Working: Cold working in the O temper condition is readily performed. The alloy is notably less easy to cold form in the T 4 and T 6 tempers.

Annealing: Annealing should be done at 775 F for 2 to 3 hours followed by controlled cooling at 50 f per hour down to 500 F, then air cool.

Aging: The aging precipitation heat treatment is done at 350 F for 8 hours followed by air cooling. This produces the T6 temper.

Application

Commonly used in the manufacture of heavy-duty structures requiring good corrosion resistance, railroad cars, furniture, tank fittings, truck and marine components, general structural and high pressure applications, wire products, pipelines, various toolings etc.
